Piedmont Hotels Italy

Piedmont Piedmont is the second largest of Italy’s 20 regions after Sicily, and has an area of around 25K sq km and a population of around 4. 5 million. Piedmont is surrounded on three sides by the Alps, consisting of the Maritime, Cotian, Graian, Pennine Alps and a small part of the Lepontine Alps. This area also includes the source of the Po, Montvis, and Monte Rosa. It shares borders with France, Switzerland, and the Italian regions of Lombardy, Liguria, Aosta Valley and a small portion of Emilia Romagna.

The whole region of Piedmont is crossed by several Alpine streams flowing into the Po river, and there are several Italian lakes in this area, with two lakes Maggiore and Lago d’Orta situated in the east. From the highest peaks the land slopes down, or sometimes makes an abrupt transition, to the plains. This leads to a varied scenery – from the rugged peaks of Monte Rosa and the Gran Paradiso National Park, to the damp rice fields of the Vercellese and Novarese, and from the hillsides of the Langhe and Monferrat down to the plains.

There are 56 national or regional parks in Piedmont. Piedmont is a wine growing area and a haven for gourmets: Barbera, Asti and Barolo wines come from here. The capital of Piedmont is Turin, sometimes called “La Parigi d’Italia” – the Italian Paris, with its wide tree lined avenues.

Home of the famous Turin Shroud, the largest Egyptian Museum outside Cairo, and the headquarters of Fiat, Turin was the seat of the House of Savoy and houses the Royal Palace.
