Poitou-Charentes Hotels France

Poitou-Charentes Poitou-Charentes is one of the 26 administrative regions of France, situated in central western France. It is bordered to the north by Pays de la Loire, to the northeast by Centre, Limousin to the east and Aquitaine to the south, whilst its western coastline is with the Atlantic Ocean. The capital of the region is Poitiers. The Poitou-Charentes region covers the central part of France’s Atlantic coastal plain. Further inland is a gently rolling hilly area, which is the first foothills of the Massif Central.

The southern part of the region sees the production of grapes in the extensive vineyards that are used to make cognac. In the north the departments of Deux Sevres and Vienne make up the historic Poitou region, and the low-lying departments of Charente and Charente-Maritime form the southern part of the region. The coastal area, including the pleasant coastal town of La Rochelle and Royan are popular for seaside tourism, but many kilometres of the coastline are devoted to the oyster beds, a local specialities.

The Atlantic coast in this area include the popular and attractive islands of Ile-d Re and Ile d’Oleron. Visitors to Poitou-Charentes can also enjoy fishing in the rivers of Vienne, seeing the wonderful image technologies at Futurescope, exploring the history of Angouleme or just enjoying walking or driving in the countryside as well as a range of other sporting and artistic activities.
