Queensland Queensland is the second largest, and the third most populous, state in Australia in the north eastern part of the Australian mainland. It shares western borders with Northern Territory, southwestern borders with South Australia, and New South Wales to the south. The Coral Sea and Pacific Ocean form Queensland’s eastern borders. The Torres Strait with Boign Island off the coast of New Guinea borders the north of Queensland, and the triangular Cape York Peninsula represents the northern extremity of Australian territory.

Queensland’s terrain is mainly that of great plains merging into higer country to th east and north west. To the north the country falls to the coastal salt flats. The Great Dividing Range runs from the southern border to the northern tip of the state.

Eastward of this the country drops seaward in a number of ranges separated by lowlands, and continues to offshore islands leading to the Great Barrier Reef. Brisbane, the capital is known as the River City as the Brisbane River winds through the city, whilst north and south of the capital are amazing beaches and untouched forests. Just south of Brisbane is the Gold Coast –in addition to the Sunshine Coast the surfing and sea mecca for visitors.

Outback Queensland forms a contrast with dusty flat plains and inhospitable terrain. The state contains several UNESCO World Heritage listed areas including Australian Fossil Mammal Sites at Riversleigh in the Gulf Country, the Gondwana Rainforests , the Great Barrier Reef, and the Wet Tropics of Queensland.
