Rhone-Alpes Hotels France

Rhone-Alpes Rhone-Alpes is one of France’s 26 regions situated in the southeast. It is bordered to the north by Bourgogne and Franche-Comte, and the Auvergne to the west, with Languedoc-Roussillon and Provence-Alpes-Cote-d’Azur to the south. The east of the region contains the western portion of the Alps, and borders Switzerland and Italy. The highest peak is Mont Blanc on the French-Italian border, and the region also borders or contains the major lakes of Lake Geneva and Lake Annecy. Rhone-Alpes also has four natural parks (Vanoise, Vercours, Pilat and Ecrins) the Massif Central, Beaujolais and Cotes de Rhone vineyards, lavender fields and much more! It is ideal for outdoor activities and sports, especially skiing in such places as Chamonix, Megev and Courcheval.

In fact the Winter Olympics have been held three times in the region. Rhone-Alpes’s capital is Lyon, the second largest metropolitan area after Paris and full of fine Renaissance buildings , and is around two hours away from Paris by TGV. Lyon has been seen as the capital of French gastronomy since the 16th century.

One of the great strengths of the region is the wide range of climates and conditions which provide the area with first class products – poultry from Bresse, fish from Dombes and the Alpine Lakes, fruits from Forez and the Rhone Valley, chestnuts from Ardeche cheeses from Savoie and Truffles from Tricastin. What a mouthwatering list ! Culture and the Arts are well covered also Lyon’s Saint Pierre Museum is the leading French museum after the Louvre, and also houses the National Opera of Lyon. Rhone-alpes has five National Theatres and five National Drama Centres, whilst Grenoble has the National Centre of Contemporary Art.
