Saxony-Anhalt Saxony-Anhalt is one of Germany’s 16 states in the north, just east of centre of Germany. It has north-western borders with Lower Saxony, northeastern borders with Brandenburg, south eastern borders with Saxony with Thuringia in the southwest. The capital of Saxony-Anhalt is Magdeburg, the second largest city after Halle. Saxony-Anhalt’s landscape is quite diverse, varying from the Altmark region of the north the state extends from the extensive lowland region of Magdeburg though the Harz low mountain range to Thuringia (high point Brocken 1141m). Below the summit there is the wildlife sanctuary of National Park Hertz.

Saxony-Anhalt has four UNESCO World Heritage sites. The Bauhaus at Dessau with a special role in the history of architecture and design of the 20th century; Martin Luther’s house in Wittenerg, and the house where he died in Eisleben , Quedlinburg’s medieval European town, and the Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Worlitz. As well as these headline tourist sites Saxony-Anhalt has a number of other attractions, including the “Romanesque Road” Around a 1,000 years ago this area was the sentre of the Ottonian dynasty of German Kings, and evidence of them can be found along the Romanesque Road route.

There are some 72 monuments at 60 locations which involve cathedrals, churches, palaces, castle and monasteries historically linked throughout Saxony-Anhalt. The northern and southern routes intersect at Magdeburg.
