Saxony The Free state of Saxony (Sachsen) is one of Germany’s 16 states situated in the central eastern part of Germany. It is the tenth largest state in area (18K sq km) and the sixth largest in population (4. 3 million or so). From the east and then moving clockwise, Saxony borders on Poland, the Czech Republic, then the German states of Bavaria, Thuringia, Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg. The major cities are Dresden, the capital, and Leipzig and Chemnitz.

Saxony comprises mainly hill and mountain country, with only the northern part and the area around Leipzig going downwards into the North European Plain. The major mountain range is the Ore Mountains, stretching for around 160km along the southern border of the state and reaching heights of around 1200 m. The northeastern part of the states features the mountains of Upper Lusatia.

These areas along the border with the Czech Republic, such as the Lusatian and Ore Mountains, and Vogtland attract significant numbers of visitors, and Dresden and Leipzig are well known to European tourists. Saxony also has many well preserved and historic towns such as Meissen, Freiberg, Pima, Bautzen and Gorliz.
