Found in East Asia, China is home to over 1. 3 billion people and is the most populated state in the world. China has borders with 14 counties, including Vietnam and India and has a climate of wet monsoons and dry seasons. In the Northern part of the country is the province of Shanxi-Sheng, called so because of its location to the west of the Taihang Mountains. The capital of the province is Taiyuan, heavily industrialised from iron, steel and coal.

Jinci is famous for its temples and amazing architecture with paintings that date back from the Song Dynasty. In Ying County you will find the world’s tallest pagoda, built in 1056, with nine levels it is around 67 meters tall.

Also of interest is that it is fully wooden and is the oldest wood only pagoda still in existence. Pingyao is an ancient city which is now a World Heritage Site and features many well preserved features of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Another World Heritage Site is Yungang Grotoes, a series of over 250 caves with Buddhist sculptures inside.

Staying with the Buddhist theme, Mount Wutai is the highest point in Shanxi and is a Buddhist pilgrim destination as it is believed to be the residence of bodhisattva Manjusri. If nature is more of interest to you than architecture then you can visit the Hukou Waterfall, standing at 50 metres high it is the second highest waterfall in the whole of China. If you prefer your history a bit more recent than the Mind Dynasty then maybe Zuoquan County would be interesting.
