South Dakota Hotels United States
South Dakota can be found in the Midwestern region of the United States, on its eastern side is Minnesota and Iowa, to the west is Wyoming and Montana and to the north is North Dakota and in the south is Nebraska. The state is literally cut in half by the Missouri river, the halves are known as East River and West River, the capital of the state is Pierre while Sioux Falls is the largest in terms of population. East River is where the majority of the state’s population resides; it has lush fertile lands where many crops are grown. West River is ranching country and the economy here is more dependent on tourism that the East half is. The Black Hills are in the southwest region of the state and is a range of low mountains with dense pine tree coverage; this is where you will also find Mount Rushmore which is a huge tourist destination.
The climate here is continental; the summers often produce large super cell thunderstorms while the eastern part of the state is regarded as part of tornado alley, in general there are 30 tornados per year in South Dakota. Average summer temperatures reach highs of 29 degrees while winter months drop to around -3. The state has two national parks, Wind Cave National Park which is in the Black Hills and has a series of extensive caves and bison herds.
The other is Badlands National Park which is in a semi-arid area of colourful landscape and grasslands. Mount Rushmore is probably the most famous landmark in the state and can be found in the Black Hills. There are a number of other sites such as Jewel Cave National Park which is near to Custer and the Lewis and Clarke National Historical Trail.
Pierre has the Fighting Stallions Memorial, Cultural Heritage Centre and the South Dakota Discovery Centre & Aquarium. Sioux Falls has the USS South Dakota Battleship Memorial, Sertoma Butterfly House, Great Plains Zoo and Delbridge Museum of Natural History and the Old Courthouse Museum. In Custer you will find Black Hills Aerial Adventures, National Museum of Wood Carving and Flintstones Bedrock City which is an amusement park.
These are just a sample of the things that can be done and seen in the state. Hotels in the capital include the one star Capitol Inn and Suites the two star Comfort Inn and the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Fort Pierre. Sioux Falls has the two star Days Inn Empire and the three star Homewood Suites by Hilton Sioux Falls.
In Custer there is the two star State Game Lodge and the 2 ½ star Holiday Inn Express.
