The state of Chhattisgarh is in central India and the predominant language spoken here is a dialect of eastern Hindi. There about 35 tribes who inhabit the state and each tribe has its own history, music, culture, dance, clothes and food. The area is surrounded with dense forest, hilly mountains, streams, waterfalls, natural caves and parks. There is no surprise then that it attracts many foreign tourists each year. It is a relatively new tourist destination and is becoming more popular each year.

The capital of the state is Raipur and the area is known for Kosa silk and lost wax art, used for saris, salwar suits, lehengas stoles and shawls. It is also known for its arts and crafts such as bamboo crafts, bell metals, wrought iron and cotton fabrics made by the tribes. The state is full of ancient monuments, carved temples, palaces and rock painting.

Much of this is still untouched and not crowded tourist spots yet. Places to visit Places to visit in the state include the Kawardha, Kanker and Bastar Palaces as these are the most important ones in Chhattisgarh. These Palaces are open September to April.

Kanker palace is a main residence of the royal family and there is a local festival held here every year. The Bastar Dussehra Festival is the biggest and most vibrant and revolves around the goddess Devi Danteswari Mai. There are many important festivals in the state meaning there is a lot to do all year round.

Transport The main railway stations are Bilaspur, Raipur and Durg. The state of Chhattisgarh is well connected to the major cities of India via express trains. The roads are improving now, and the national highway 6 (Mumbai to Kolkata) passes through the state.

There are 11 national highways that run through the state in all. There is an airport in Raipur which has flights to Delhi, Bombay, Kolkata, Bhopal and Indore. You can get buses and trains from the airport to different parts of the state.

Weather The state of Chhattisgarh has a hot and humid climate and temperatures can reach 45 degrees with lows of 10 degrees. April to June are the hottest, and monsoons are possible from June to September. The best months to visit are November to march when it is cooler and drier.
