Sikkim is a state situated in the Himalayas. The region is the shape of a thumb and is land-locked. It is subdivided into 4 main regions: North Sikkim, East Sikkim, South Sikkim and West Sikkim. The whole province has Nepal to the west, to the north and east you will find China and in the southeast is Bhutan. Due to its beauty and culture this region is a popular destination still relatively unspoilt and natural.

The capital of Sikkim is Gangtok which is also the largest town in the state. The third highest mountain in the world is called Kangchenjunga and has three of its five peaks on the border of north Sikkim. Its long name means the five treasures of the snow due to its five peaks.

The residents of Sikkim view this as a sacred mountain. A popular trekking route is called Goecha La which is a mountain pass that provides a view of the southeast face of the mountain. This state has 227 lakes most notably Tsongmo Lake which is a high-altitude lake near to a unique and wonderful three-storied cave called Tseten Tashi Cave.

Lake Gurudongnan Lake is a sacred high-altitude lake. Due to its location to China the whole area is controlled by the Army. If you want to visit this lake it is recommended that you have an overnight stop at Lachen to get used to the altitude.

While at the lake enjoy the breathtaking scenery and the mountains. You will generally be asked to leave the lake by early afternoon 1-2pm as the wind speeds can pick up! Accommodation is generally affordable in this whole region. Rooms run the pricing gamut from low-budget to expensive.

There are budget hotels such as Tarika in Gangtok which is close to the Royal Palace. Hotel Darjeeling Palace offers great value for money. Midrange hotels include the popular Welcome Heritage Denzong Regency and Bamboo Grove Retreat which is a boutique hotel.
