Tasmania Tasmania is an Australian island state, 240 km south of the Australian continent, across the Bass Strait, and is surrounded by the Indian and Pacific Oceans. The state itself includes the island of Tasmania plus the surrounding islands. The state capital and largest city is Hobart: other towns include Launceston in the north and Devonport and Burnie in the northwest. Around 40% of Tasmania consists of reserves, national parks and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Tasmania is the most mountainous state in Australia with a number of smooth mountain ranges.

The most mountainous region is the Central Highlands area in the central-west, and the Midlands, the central east are fairly flat and used for agriculture. Tasmania’s tallest peak is Mount Ossa (1617m) which is found in the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park. Tasmania is densely forested with some of the last temperate rain forest in the southern hemisphere.

Tasmania has many rivers, mostly dammed to provide hydroelectricity. Though smallish Tasmania’s landscape can change from rainforested valleys and highland lakes to beaches glistening with white sand and sea cliffs – all within a couple of hours drive ! Tasmania is a playground for visitors interested in outdoor activities such as camping, fishing, walking and trekking or in watching wildlife. Visitors can try all terrain vehicles, cycling holidays, kayaking or canoeing or diving.
