Thuringia Thuringia is a Free State of Germany, one of Germany’s 16 states and is situated in the central part of the country and is known as the “green heart of Germany because of the dense forests covering the terrain. From the northwest clockwise, Thuringia borders on the German states of Lower Saxony, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony, Bavaria and Hesse. It is divided from the state of Saxony on the north west by the ridges of the western Harz Mountains whilst the eastern Harz similarly splits Thuringia from Saxony-Anhalt to the north east. The mountain chain of the Thuringian Forest similarly separates the northern part of Bavaria from the plains of most of Thuringia, and the Werra River, separates this mountain chain from the volcanic Rhon Mountains. The diversity of the area is its strength as a holiday region – nature and culture are treasures of Thuringia – the land of Luther, Bach, Schiller and Goethe connected with the towns of Erfurt (the capital), Jena, Weimar and Eisenbach.

Visitors can enjoy the unspoilt countryside and explore the Thuringian Forest. In Thuringia there are around 16K kilometres of marked trails, wonderful for hikers and walkers, and include the Rennsteig trail through Hainich National Park, and the Barbarossa Trail in the Kyffhauser hills. Or other favourite activities are sightseeing in fascinating castles and palaces and medieval towns, or relaxing at a spa.
