Tuscany Tuscany , in central Italy is one of Italy’s 20 regions, and has an area of 22K sq km and a population of around 3. 6 million. Roughly triangular, Tuscany is situated between the northern part of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the central Apennines and is crossed by major mountain chains and with few but fertile plains almost all in the valley of the River Arno. The terrain is dominated with undulating hills which cover around two thirds of Tuscan ground area. The climate, though mild at the coast is more rainy in the interior, with considerable fluctuations in temperature between winter and summer.

Tuscany is a most visited place, not just for its beautiful landscapes, but also for its unsurpassed artistic legacy and influence on culture. Regarded as the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, Tuscany has been home to some of the most influential people in both art and science. These include Petrarch, Dante, Botticelli, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci , Galileo Galilei, Amerigo Vesucci and Puccini.

Six Tuscan areas are designated as UNESCO World Heritage sites. These are, the historic centres of Florence (the regional captial), Siena, San Gimignano, and Pienza, and also the square of the Cathedral of Pisa and the Val d’Orca. In addition, Tuscany has over 120 protected nature reserves, and these rich resources make it one of the most visited areas in the world.

So Tuscany has diverse attractions for the visitor – the art cities of Florence, Siena, Lucca, Pisa, the small towns, villages castles, and villas and also the famous vineyards and wine country. Most of the larger wineries are in the most famous zones – Chianti Classico, Montalcino and Montepulciano and sampling their delights fits so nicely into a Tuscan tour whether city-based or countryside.
