Umbria Hotels Italy

Umbria Umbria is one of Italy’s 20 regions in central Italy. To the west of the region is Tuscany, the Marche to the east, and Lazio is to the south. Perugia is the regional capital with many other towns of interest to tourists including Assisi, Orvieto, Gubbio and Spoleto. The terrain of Umbria is mountainous and hilly, with a rich green landscape of woods and water.

The region is crossed by the Apennines (highest point 2476m), that form a number of valleys, and has a large lake, the Trasimeno. Umbria is the only region of Italy that has no border with another country or coastline, but it is an ideal place to stay for exploring the major sights in central Italy. This beautiful area is steeped in history from the Etruscans, to the Romans, medieval fortresses and castles, and the Renaissance and its marvellous art and architecture.

Etruscan remains can be found in Todi, Bettona, Orvieto and Perugia, whilst Spoleto, Assisi and Gubbio have Roman remains. Romanesque architecture can be found in the churches at Spoleto, Assisi and Bevagna and Gothic architecture can be found in almost every city. Assisi’s Basilica of San Francisco has the famous Giotto frescoes showing 28 paintings of the life of the saint, and also Assisi has the Rocca Maggiore, the 11th century church on a hilltop, surrounded by a high wall, and the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, the church where Francis of Assisi started the Franciscan movement.
