Upper Austria Upper Austria is the fourth largest (around 12K sq km) of Austria’s nine states and the fourth largest in population (about 1. 3 million). Situated in the north-west of Austria, Upper Austria shares borders with Germany and the Czech Republic, and the Austrian states of Lower Austria, Styria and Salzburg. Pretty well situated at the central part of Europe on the Paris-Budapest west-east and the Malmo-Trieste north-south axis across Europe. Linz is the state capital.

The region is mainly hilly, and is drained by the Danube River and three of its tributaries, the Inn, Enns and Traun and includes a large part of the Salzkammergut resort area. There are a number of attractions in Upper Austria for the tourist. there are many lakes offering a number of facilities for outdoor pursuits.

There is Almsee, a lake in the Almtal Valley, and Gosausee and Gosau, lakes in the Salzkammergut area, also Traunsee and Hallstatter, particularly favoured by tourists for scuba diving. Visitors can also enjoy Kaiserville, the summer capital of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy,. The imperial villa of Franz Joseph I is in Ischi.

There is also the castle, Schloss Ort situated in the Traunsee Lake and the Schafbergbahn, a narrow gauge cog railway, with some steam locomotives. Linz and its environs are also worth exploring.
