Washington Washington is a state in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States of America. In 2009 the population was around 6. 6 million or so. Washington, named after the president is usually called Washington state to distinguish it from the US capital which is referred to as Washington DC. Washington state is the most northwestern state of the contiguous USA, with its northern border along the 19th parallel, then borders with the ocean by the Strait of Georgia, Haro Strait and Strait of Juan de Fuca, with British Colombia, the Canadian province to the north.

Southern borders are with Oregon and Idaho to the east. Almost 60% of Washington state residents live in the Seattle metropolitan area, the centre of activity and business along the Puget sound area and home to an internationally recognised arts community. Washington’s position gives the state a major role in maritime trade with Alaska, Canada and the Pacific Rim, and Puget Sound’s many islands are served by a huge ferry fleet.

Washington terrain in one of contrasts, the temperate rain forest of the Olympic Peninsula, the semi-desert east, and the high mountains of the Cascade Range which contains several volcanoes such as Mount Baker, Glacier Peak, Mount Rainer, Mount St Helens and Mount Adams. Currently Mount St Helens is the only volcano erupting but all are considered active. Washington State offers a range of opportunities for the visitor – festivals, concerts theatre and arts for the city visitor whilst the outdoor enthusiast will be spoilt for choice with cycling, hiking, backpacking, mountains climbing, boating, sailing, rafting, and skiing.
