The history of Zhejiang Sheng dates back to 7000 years ago and its Neolithic Hemudu Cultural Ruins are regarded as one of the cradles of the Chinese civilization. This coastal area situated in south-eastern China is bordered by the East China Sea and the provinces of Fujian to the south. It is home to many of Chinas ethnic minority groups including Han, Hui, Manchu and Miao and is the province with the most islands in China, boasting more than 200 along its coast. Zhejiang sheng is densely populated and in the top ten of Chinas economic regions, with Hangzhou and Wenzhou being the major manufacturing areas and very affluent. Wenzhou meaning mild and pleasant land and gets its name because of the mild climate.

Hangzhou is the capital city of the Zhejiang sheng province and located in the northern part of the area. This is the main tourist city as its home to the West Lake, a famous lake in China associated with many scholars, national heroes and revolutionary martyrs. Picturesque and surrounded by mountains and ancient buildings, it also has a connecting bridge to Shanghai.

This historic lake cannot be missed. Other cities in the province include, Fenghua an agricultural trade centre and famously home to former Republic of China President, Chiang Kai-shek. The city of Jiaxing, a communications centre, north of the port of Hangzhou and on the railway between Hangzhou and Shanghai, is also known as the 'home of silk' and one of the world’s largest exporters of leather goods.

It is also famous for its River Culture Festival that takes place at the South Lake during October to November, and its fabulous water towns. Hotels in the provinces are extensive, but for 5 star luxury try staying at The Hangzhou Shangri-La Hotel located on the northwest bank of the West Lake, it has extensive gardens and the hotel offers a variety fabulous Chinese and western dishes. Alternatively for a stay in Wenzhou, the 3 star City Inn Banda Hotel is conveniently placed near to the railway station and close to the city centre and shopping areas.

While for a visit to the water towns in Jiaxing the 4 star Parkyard Hotel, would also place you well for visits to both Shanghai and Hangzhou.
